Marketing Lessons from a Bruising Year in 2025

Holy guacamole, what a year. If you managed to keep your marketing budget intact and your sanity mostly together through 2025, you deserve a medal. Or at least a really strong margarita.

We’ve been right there with you, experiencing all that was running a business in 2025. At Elevantics, we watched the digital marketing world turn into something resembling a dumpster fire at a fireworks factory. At various times, we just had to shake our heads and laugh! And we’re going to share what marketing lessons made us want to pull our hair our.

But here’s the thing: We also spotted some genuinely exciting opportunities brewing for 2026. So grab your coffee (or something stronger), and let’s overthink what went wrong in 2025 and what to do about it in 2026.

1. Death by a Thousand Apps

The digital marketing tool situation in 2025 got completely out of hand. We had clients showing up with spreadsheets just to track their marketing subscriptions. SPREADSHEETS. To track software they barely understood!

Every week, some venture-funded startup would slide into our DMs promising their platform would “revolutionize” our workflow. We know you got them, too! By December, the average small business was bleeding money across 20 different “essential” marketing tools, each with its own steep learning curve.

The worst part? These tools integrated about as well as booze at a Baptist potluck. We spent more time copying and pasting between platforms than actually marketing. It was like having 20 remote controls for one TV; technically functional, but absolutely frustrating to keep up with.

2. The Great AI Vomit Storm of 2025

Look, we’re not AI haters at Elevantics marketing. We fancy ourselves to be AI experts, and there are a lot of great tools out there we use effectively. But 2025 was the year the internet ate itself with artificially generated word salad.

Every business owner or marketing manager with a ChatGPT subscription suddenly became a “content creator.” Google search results turned into a hellscape of identical articles that all somehow managed to say absolutely nothing in 2,000 perfectly optimized words. (Don’t get us started on the accuracy problems!) It was like everyone was reading from the same really boring, untrustworthy script written by a robot trying to fake it till he makes it.

This was the year that AI slop hit every single corner and facet of the internet. Using social media was drowning in an ocean of AI-generated nonsense that your high school friends can’t distinguish from the real thing. It felt at times like we’re inching toward making the Dead Internet Theory a reality.

3. Total Penny-Pinching Panic

Here’s where things got really ugly. As everyone tightened their belts in 2025, marketing budgets were among the first victims to be slashed like teenagers in an ‘80s VHS. And we get it: Hard choices have to be made as business slows down! But it was no fun to watch (like a ‘70s VHS).

We saw businesses cut their marketing spending while somehow expecting sales to stay the same. That’s like canceling your gym membership and wondering why you’re not getting stronger. The logic was… not logic-ing.

The saddest part? It would have been so much more beneficial to adjust and reallocate those marketing dollars than to stop spending them altogether. But many SMBs felt they had no choice.

Plot Twist: 2026 Is Looking Spicy (In a Good Way)

Okay, enough doom and gloom. Let’s talk about the useful trends that have us excited about 2026:

1. AI Search Is the Wild West

Yes, AI was one of the scariest things to happen to digital marketing in 2025, but also one of the biggest reasons for hope in the new year! (AI covers a lot of stuff.) One of the biggest trends we watched in 2025 was the user shift from Google for research toward using ChatGPT and other LLM tools for research.

What does this mean for real businesses with real expertise? If you invest in your LLM optimization for your digital assets, you can shoot from an afterthought in Google results to a favorite of ChatGPT and others! These AI systems are getting scary good at identifying genuine, conversational content that actually helps people. It doesn’t use the same criteria to answer queries that search engines use, so those entrenched competitors are no longer fated to always rank above you anymore. That’s a HUGE opportunity for businesses of all sizes as search engine users switch over to LLMs.

2. Short-form Video Still Plays

While everyone was having an existential crisis about which platform to use, short-form video just kept winning. TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts are where people’s eyeballs could most reliably be found. Phone-sized video gets more social media engagement than anything. This is how people learn and entertain themselves nowadays.

The best part? The actual quality of the videos hardly matters. We’ve seen a plumber with an iPhone absolutely demolish fancy agencies with their ring lights and scripts. Turns out, people want real humans being real humans. Who knew? (We did. We’ve been saying this forever.)

3. Your Best Customers Check Their Email

While everyone was distracted by the shiny new platforms, email was quietly the most trusted marketing channel for a ton of businesses and consumers. But here’s the twist: The top email campaigns had nothing to do with growing your list in 2025. They worked by talking to the people already there.

We’re seeing 5x better ROI from email marketing campaigns to existing customers than any new acquisition effort. It’s like finding money in your couch cushions, except the couch is your email list and the money is in actual amounts that matter.
